PDF and image tools for Chromebook
Updated October 12, 2026
Chromebooks are fast, simple and cheap to run, but they can't install the desktop apps many people reach for to merge a PDF, convert a Word document or open iPhone photos. School and work Chromebooks are often locked down further, with app and extension installs turned off.
Every tool on this site runs in a Chrome tab, so all of them work on a Chromebook with nothing to install.
What you can do in the browser
| Task | Tool |
|---|---|
| Combine PDFs into one file | Merge PDF |
| Split a PDF or extract pages | Split PDF |
| Rotate, delete or reorder PDF pages | Organize PDF |
| Turn a Word document into a PDF | Word to PDF |
| Convert iPhone photos to JPG | HEIC to JPG |
| Shrink photos for an upload limit | Compress image |
| Change the size of an image | Resize image |
| Edit a Word document | Word editor |
| Comment on or fill in a PDF | PDF editor |
| Edit a photo or layered image | Photo editor |
Why this works well on a Chromebook
- Nothing to install. No app, no extension, no admin permission needed.
- Your files stay on the Chromebook. The tools process files inside the browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, which matters on shared or managed devices.
- Works with the Files app. Choose files from My files, Downloads or Google Drive, and results are saved to Downloads.
- No account needed for everyday use.
Tips for Chromebooks
- Low on memory? Close other tabs before working with very large PDFs or long batches of photos. Everything runs on your Chromebook, so free memory helps.
- Editors want a big screen. The PDF, Word and photo editors are full applications. They work best on a larger display with a keyboard and mouse or trackpad.
- Going offline? Open the tool and add your files while you're still online. The processing itself doesn't need a connection.
